    Stand Up Meetings

This is my second post in a row about meetings, which is unusual because I am a telecommuter who can happily work all day without seeing a living soul. When I am asked to participate in a corporate meeting I am often struck by the massive waste of time and energy that ensues. There are a lot of strategies for running more efficient meetings, but one of the best ideas I have heard of in a while comes from the OrganizingLA Blog:

Because the meetings were so long, someone on the team suggested we institute "stand up meetings."  Instead of sitting at a traditional conference table, we took the chairs out of the room and ran meetings while standing on our feet.  Well, the length of the meetings DRASTICALLY dropped, because people didn't want to stand for long.  Meetings went from 30-60 minutes to roughly 1/2 of that while still delivering meaty content.  Neat, huh?

    Neat indeed.

Seth Godin: I think doing name tags properly transforms a meeting. Here's why

    • People don't really know everyone, even if they think they do.
    • If you don't know someone's name, you are hesitant to talk to them.
    • If you don't talk to them, you never get to know them and you both lose.
    • If you are wearing a name tag, it's an invitation to start a conversation.

Name tags are always a good idea at conferences and meetings where there are a large amount of people who you have never met before or whose name you can't remember. I sometimes wish they had name tags at gigs too - I have had so many awkward conversations with people whilst desperately trying to remember their names or if their boyfriends' wanted to kill me.

This is also a good idea for the next 27Dinner - too late for tonight perhaps, but it would definitely help break the ice at the next Jozi one.
